How is the search performed?

The search will be conducted in decisions of competition authorities and similar documents (for more details please refer to the jurisdiction sections below). The search is performed in case-insensitive fashion.

If the switch "Decisions in/translated into English only" is activated (which is the default), Merger Mind will search in all English documents as well as all documents that have been translated into English. If this switch is deactivated, Merger Mind will also consider all non-English documents for a given search request.

Merger Mind will search for results related to both/all terms that you've typed in the search field. Therfore, Merger Mind's algorithm makes an AND operator redundant if you search for multiple separate terms. To refine your search, you can use Boolean operators:

AND or +

Limit results

Search for X and Y. This will return only results related to both X and Y. Note: It doesn’t really make much difference for regular searches, as Merger Mind defaults to “AND” anyway. But it’s very useful when paired with other operators.

OR or |

One term OR another

Search for X or Y. This will return results related to X or Y, or both. Note: The pipe (|) operator can also be used in place of “OR.”

-

Exclude a term from the search

Exclude a term or phrase. E.g., the query "margin squeeze" -telecommunication will return only results that matches "margin squeeze" but do not contain the term telecommunication.

" "

Exact phrase

Force an exact-match search. Use this to refine results for ambiguous searches. A phrase that is enclosed within double quote (") characters matches only documents that contain the phrase literally, as it was typed. E.g., "geographic allocation" turnover which is the same as "geographic allocation" AND turnover. Non-word characters need not be matched exactly. For example, "product market" matches "product, market".

( )

Group multiple terms or search operators to control how the search is executed. E.g., "potential competition" AND (technology OR electronics)

Merger Mind also has further advanced features such as keyword stemming. This enables Merger Mind to understand different word forms of a specific search query. To give an example: if you use the word ‘buy’ in a sentence, our stemming algorithm will, for instance, also recognize the words ‘buys’, ‘buying’ and ‘bought’ as variations of the word ‘buy’ as well.
